Characters, places, lore, and events
Create editable reference entries for the people, settings, factions, world rules, events, and notes that shape your novel.
HexaQuill brings your chapters, summaries, and worldbuilding into one local-first Windows writing app. Its living Codex helps you keep characters, locations, lore, factions, events, and notes close to the manuscript they belong to.
Available now in HexaQuill Free: the chapter editor, living Codex, chapter summaries, Word and PDF exports, an optional OpenRouter connection, and up to five editable novels.
A novel can quickly accumulate character histories, locations, promises, injuries, relationships, rules, and timeline details. When those facts live across chat histories, loose notes, and separate files, checking continuity becomes slower than writing.
A story bible gives those details a permanent home. HexaQuill calls this the Codex. You decide what belongs in it, update entries as the story changes, and keep the reference material beside your chapters.
The current free release helps you build reliable context before you ask an AI for help.
Create editable reference entries for the people, settings, factions, world rules, events, and notes that shape your novel.
Keep a short summary for each chapter so major actions, discoveries, and turning points are easier to review later.
Write chapter by chapter with goals, word counts, rich formatting, and navigation that keeps a long manuscript manageable.
Connect OpenRouter when you want AI assistance. Your selected provider and model still have their own context limits and privacy terms.
Keep the scene and chapter work inside the same novel project.
Record the key outcome, reveal, decision, or timeline movement.
Add new facts and revise entries when characters or world rules evolve.
When you use AI, ask a focused question with the relevant story material.
HexaQuill stores your novel in a local folder you choose. You can place that folder inside your own backup or sync service, but HexaQuill does not require you to move the manuscript into its cloud.
AI is optional. Text is sent to your selected provider only when you deliberately use an AI feature. Read the Privacy Policy before connecting a provider.
The current app does not promise that an AI continuously reads and remembers every word in every novel. Useful results still depend on relevant, well-maintained context.
Your Codex is most useful when you keep important entries and summaries accurate. You remain the authority on what is canon.
Each model can process only a limited amount of text at once. Focused chapters, summaries, and Codex entries help you use that space more deliberately.
Direct local AI connections and the MCP Companion are planned Premium features. They remain locked in the current free public release.
Yes. The free release includes the editor, Codex, exports, optional OpenRouter connection, and up to five editable novels.
No software should promise perfect memory. HexaQuill helps you create structured story context through your Codex and chapter summaries, while AI results still depend on the model and the material supplied.
Yes. Your novel files are stored locally. If you use an AI feature, the text needed for that request is sent to the provider you selected under that provider's terms.
That is the plan for a later Premium release. Local AI support is visible as a preview but remains locked today.
